How did you hear of Souper Bowl of Caring?I believe we learned about it through an email we received. It's been so long, I actually don't remember!
Why did you choose to join the Souper Bowl of Caring team?It provides our members with the opportunity to learn about poverty and related needs in our community. It also makes gives us the opportunity to raise some funds that are used to help make a difference!
What does your group do to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring movement? We've tried a number of different things over the years, but the most successful involves a "contest' between classes at our Middle School. Classrooms teams raise money to help support the cause that we help educate them about. Each classroom team picks the winner of the Super Bowl and by how much. The classroom team(s) that pick the winner and are closest to the point spread win "Super Bowl Sundaes"!
What have you found is most successful for raising cash and food items? The friendly competition between the classroom teams seems to work, especially at this age. The prizes also seem to motivate the students and teachers!
Was there any particularly meaningful or moving story from your collection you would like to share? We hear from many people in the community how helpful it is to receive the "Dinners to Go" that we support with these funds. We provide over 400 meals a month and over 1,600 meals total eaasch time we offer this activity which The Salvation Army only does with our clubs!
Tell us a little about where you donate your collection to.The last two years we've donated to The Salvation Army, where we co-sponsor a"Dinners to Go" program that provides nutritious, take-home meals to people in need in our community during the last week of each month (January through April). Our youth help with some of the meal preparations and serve the evening meals to people who sign up through Salvation Army!
Are there any resources you feel Souper Bowl of Caring could develop to enhance your collection?I really can't think of anything. We use the video and posters to promote our event!
What does participating in Souper Bowl of Caring mean to your group? In addition to helping provide a valuable service-learning opportunity to our members, it helps to shed light on a need in our community!
What does it mean to you?As an Optimist member and youth advisor, I enjoy providing meaningful service opportunities for our members. This "Souper Bowl of Caring" provides important structure and guidelines as well as a national platform, but allows for freedom to make it fit the needs of our community!
