My name is Brady Brazda, a fifteen year old and a rising sophomore at The Kinkaid School. Last year, I served as a Local Youth Advisory Board Member in Houston. I knew I wanted to participate with the organization because I had hands-on experience volunteering for Souper Bowl of Caring. My sister served on the City of Houston Mayor's Youth Council for four years, and each year I would go with her to volunteer at grocery stores during the Souper Bowl of Caring season. I saw how generous Houstonians were to help the cause by purchasing Tackle Hunger bags.
Last year at the Kick-Off event, it was evident to me how important the Souper Bowl of Caring is to our community based on how many grocery stores, community leaders, youth groups, and media unite to promote the collection. That day was very worthwhile and fun for me to experience, and the most memorable event of the year.
I also hosted my own food drive during the Souper Bowl of Caring season: Brady's "You CAN Do It" Souper Group. We collected cans and food items, and when I dropped all the cans off and unloaded at Braes Interfaith Ministries, the ladies hugged me, and were so thankful. By showing kindness and care for others I have learned how deeply a person can change someone's life by a simple action. People in our city need food and when you go to a food pantry like Braes Interfaith Ministries, you see firsthand the people you are helping and it really makes you feel grateful for what you have. I hope to have the same, if not better experience this year as a Local Youth Advisory Board member.
I would recommend the Souper Bowl of Caring experience to other teens because it is truly great to serve others. I have helped with many other community service projects; however, Souper Bowl of Caring is different. This organization has a very clear mission and empowers communities to take care of one another. As a "giver" and representative of this organization, I feel proud and happy to give to those who need food, and I know that the recipients are incredibly grateful.
I am being raised by a single mom and we have many obstacles to overcome, yet we have food, when others do not. Being a youth ambassador for Souper Bowl of Caring means working with others to make sure that all are fed. It is important that I tell you my story so that I can motivate another young person to join the movement. Together, we can accomplish the mission and vision of Souper Bowl of Caring to turn our nation's biggest weekend of football into the biggest weekend of giving and serving. Houston - we have a great opportunity to do that this year as our city hosts the Big Game!
I encourage high school students who are passionate about serving to apply to this year's Greater Houston Local Youth Advisory Board!
