How did you hear of Souper Bowl of Caring?John Bell, the head pastor at Wellshire Church, introduced it to the congregation because he went to seminary with the founder of Souper Bowl of Caring, Brad Smith.
Why did you choose to join the Souper Bowl of Caring team?Souper Bowl of Caring has been a favorite tradition at Wellshire Church for over a decade; our church partners with local hunger ministries throughout the year, and Souper Bowl of Caring reliably boosts food and financial donations towards that cause.
What does your group do to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring movement? In recent years, our Youth Sunday (when middle and high school youth lead worship) has coincided with Super Bowl Sunday, so our youth personally collect cans and cash after worship for Souper Bowl of Caring.
What have you found is most successful for raising cash and food items? The Denver Broncos heading to the Super Bowl definitely didn't hurt! The most popular collection method we've found is pitting our Broncos fans at Wellshire Church against of the opposing Super Bowl team from a church in that team's state in a friendly competition for cans.
Was there any particularly meaningful or moving story from your collection you would like to share? When the Broncos went to Super Bowl 50 against the Panthers, Wellshire collaborated with other churches and organizations in Colorado and the west to make the giant "United in Orange" team. Together, the team gathered over 360,000 items for hunger relief.
Tell us a little about where you donate your collection to.We donate to Metro Caring, an organization in Central Denver that shares 2.3 million pounds of nutritious food - over 70% of it fresh - with people coping with hunger in the Denver metro area. Metro Caring also offers nutrition and gardening education at their on-site raised beds, as well as financial and lifestyle programs to foster self-sufficiency.
Are there any resources you feel Souper Bowl of Caring could develop to enhance your collection? We take advantage of the bulletin inserts and apply the logo within our own materials; our congregation recognizes those elements and looks forward to the return of Souper Bowl of Caring every year.
What does participating in Souper Bowl of Caring mean to your group?Youth Sunday and Souper Bowl of Caring fit hand-in-glove; it's a worthy mission component that complements the youth leading worship.
What does it mean to you? It's rewarding to watch Wellshire's youth participate in a tradition that connects them to others with compassion and energy, especially when the results help to solve problems in our community.
