Thank you for helping us reach the goal in our efforts to tackle hunger. Your support is very much appreciated.
How did you hear of Souper Bowl of Caring? We first heard about the Souper Bowl of Caring through our participation as members of the Houston Mayor's Youth Council. Through the council, we participated in hunger-related events, became passionate about tackling hunger, and eventually decided to apply for Souper Bowl of Caring's Local Youth Advisory Board, where we became educated on the organization's mission, goals, and vision.
Why did you choose to join the Souper Bowl of Caring team?We chose to join the Souper Bowl of Caring team because we want to not only tackle the issue of hunger and food insecurity, but we also want to help our communities in need. We feel connected to their mission statement: "mobiliz[ing] youth in a united national effort to care for people in their local communities who are hungry and those in need."
What does your group do to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring movement?Carnegie Vanguard High School collaborates with Interact Club and National Honor Society each year to host food drives and volunteer events for the Souper Bowl of Caring movement. All collections are donated to the Houston Food Bank. In previous years, we have volunteered at Kroger with our Interact Club to encourage customers to purchase pre-packed bags of food to donate to the Houston Food Bank.
What have you found is most successful for raising cash and food items? We found that getting the youth involved is the most successful method to raising cash and food items due to their creativity, their connections, and their dedication. We also found that spreading the word throughout the student body enables students to be educated about the organization and encouraged to participate in future food drives and collections.
Was there any particularly meaningful or moving story from your collection you would like to share? It was particularly touching to see how a single collection could unite an entire school to aid in a cause. We are proud of how our school's involvement with the Souper Bowl of Caring collection has expanded and improved throughout the years. When we started Carnegie Vanguard High School's first food collection, we collected only 28 food items and 62 pounds of food. The next year, with more student involvement, we collected 285 food items and 319 pounds of food. Finally, for our third and most recent year (2016), we raised 350 food items and 333 pounds of food! With the growth and success from our previous food collections, we look forward to future donations and aim to set a goal to surpass previous years' collections at the school.
Tell us a little about where you donate your collection to.Every year, we donate 100% of all food collections to the Houston Food Bank, one of the largest food banks in America. The Houston Food Bank and the Souper Bowl of Caring have been in a partnership for many years. Last year, we (as a student body of only 623 students) collected and donated 350 food items and 333 pounds of food which was completely 100% donated to the Houston Food Bank!
Are there any resources you feel Souper Bowl of Caring could develop to enhance your collection? We always welcome more volunteers and collections! If Souper Bowl of Caring could use their media to broadcast our collections, then that might help with the amount of collections received in future years!
What does participating in Souper Bowl of Caring mean to your group? It means being able to be actively involved in the community and working together to help our neighbors and community. Participating in Souper Bowl of Caring each year also means that we are become a vital part of a movement that helps to decrease the rate of hunger, poverty, and homelessness that exist in our communities.
What does it mean to you?To us, it means being able to apply our knowledge, passion, and dedication to help make a positive difference, no matter how small the difference may be. It means that we are able to educate others and encourage the movement of tackling hunger.
