How did you hear of Souper Bowl of Caring? We have been participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring for the past 11 years thanks to Hillside UMC. City on a Hill UMC is a church plant of Hillside UMC and Souper Bowl of Caring has been a part of our DNA since the very beginning.
Why did you choose to join the Souper Bowl of Caring team?We chose to join the Souper Bowl of Caring team because we are a church of mission--both local, national and international.
What does your group do to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring movement? Our church partners with a local food bank, Papa's Pantry, in order to supplement the food pantry with canned collection as well as financial support. We hand out brown bags to our congregations which people fill with canned/boxed goods and then return to donate.
What have you found is most successful for raising cash and food items? We have found that on the weekend of the actual Super Bowl, we have an exit offering that is taken up in large soup pots with each of the Super Bowl team's logos on the front. This gives our congregation an opportunity to predict the outcome of the game.
Was there any particularly meaningful or moving story from your collection you would like to share?Over the years our church has developed a close relationship with a local boy scout troop who now participate in this mission with us. We have found that the Souper Bowl of Caring is an excellent opportunity for students to personally experience local mission. Students are able to apply faith in action by supporting our local food pantry. Many times when students experience this mission in action, they choose to participate in other local mission opportunities!
Tell us a little about where you donate your collection to.All of our donations go to Papa's Pantry in Woodstock.
Are there any resources you feel Souper Bowl of Caring could develop to enhance your collection? We feel that better media would be helpful in drawing the interest of our community.
What does participating in Souper Bowl of Caring mean to your group?Souper Bowl of Caring is a chance to serve with compassion, grow together through mission, become what Jesus wants us to be and to change the world through one loving act at a time
What does it mean to you?We are a church of mission and this is one of the many ways we serve our community.
