During the early hours of Friday, January 6, Souper Bowl of Caring joined community partners, school groups and volunteers at the Central Texas Food Bank to kick off the 2017 Central Texas Souper Bowl of Caring Campaign.

Energized by performances from the St. Edwards Spirit Squad, the Travis High School Drum line and Guitar Ensemble, Linder Elementary School Mariachi Band and Rodriguez Elementary Choir, the community rallied together to begin the collection that has a goal to generate 2,750,000 meals for the Central Texas community. Volunteers from Crockett High School, Veritas Academy, H-E-B, Central Market and Randalls worked together to sort hundreds of pounds of donated food.

Media partners also joined in on the fun to share the giving opportunity with the Central Texas community. The Kick Off was hosted in the new Central Texas Food Bank facility, which has nearly tripled it's food storage capacity. To fill the warehouse with nutritious food, and help to provide resources to the agencies in its 21 county service area, folks are encouraged to donate in their local HEB, Central Market or Randalls. Individuals can also register a team and host a collection for a local charity. One hundred percent of Souper Bowl of Caring collections are donated to the local community.

In Texas, one out of every six people are food insecure, meaning they do not have consistent access to food. Nearly 42,000 people receive food assistance from the Central Texas Food Bank each week, year round. Souper Bowl of Caring occurs at a time in the year after a busy holiday season, reminding the community that unfortunately hunger is an issue 365 days of the year.

You can help tackle hunger by joining Souper Bowl of Caring this season. With Texas hosting the Big Game, all eyes will be on our state to witness the impact of a united community effort. Stay tuned to the website to see the results roll in real time. The community has until Super Bowl Sunday, February 5 to help reach the goal!
