Small congregation, huge heart
As the years pass, we look around in the pews each Sunday at Gloria Dei and see more grey hair (or just less hair). more folks taking a bit longer to shuffle up the aisles, and sad to say, more empty places where "Bill" or "Susan" or "Martha" or ... used to occupy faithfully. Yet, each year, our generous members drop dollars and dimes into the soup kettles held by our young acolytes and servers. This year, our congregation, which puts feeding the hungry right at the top of its social ministry… -

Souper Bowl of Caring -- Knock Out Hunger
This year our friendly competition was led by Souper Heroes who helped us to see ways that we can Knock Out Hunger. Visitors came to our worship each Sunday to inspire us to give. On Souper Bowl Sunday, our kids dressed as Souper Heroes and took up a "noisy offering" to collect money in addition to the items we collected. Our local food pantry had a great need for personal hygiene items this year, so that was the focus of our collection. All items and monies were donated to the food pantry… -
The Blessing Box
St. Paul United Methodist Church is located in a Food desert in East Winston Salem. The evangelism ministry of the church placed a blessing box on the corner for persons to receive or donate food as they desired. We have noticed a large number of children taking things from the box particularly in the afternoon once they get off of the school bus. The larger food pantries in the city do not focus on this side of town but give to all of the city. We decided that an area with limited food… -

Groundhogs Day Fun/Pun
Since the Super Bowl was on Groundhog's day this year, and because we live in Pennsylvania, home of the world's greatest weather prognosticator, we felt the need to promote the Souper Bowl of Caring with a variety of groundhog related puns. The people of our congregation always practice Punxsutawney Phil-Anthropy. Therefore we didn't have to shadow anyone to get them to chuck in a contribution. Yes, we have a Punxsutawney Phil-Osophy of giving.
OK, that's it. We promise. -
