The youth groups of First Christian and Covenant Presbyterian Churches are participating in Souper Bowl of Caring. Souper Bowl of Caring began with a prayer at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in 1989, and has grown to a nationwide initiative to mobilize teens to fight hunger and poverty. Every dollar or food item collected by participating groups is donated directly to a local charity. The local group's charity of choice this year is the Community Food Pantry in Marshall, serving Saline County.
Organizations in all 50 states generated more than $10.4 million in cash and non-perishable food items in 2016. Every penny and food item went directly to charities and helped those in need. More than 42 million Americans -- including 13 million children -- are facing food insecurity, which is the lack of access, at times, to enough food for all household members.
Community Food Pantry feed 560 families per month. Of these, 262 have children under the age 18. Community Food Pantry receives food from the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri along with donations from local businesses, groups and individuals.
The youth group will be collecting Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Walmart. Non-perishable food items and monetary gifts will be accepted.
Sunday, Feb. 5, at 1 a.m., the youth will be collecting during prayer services at First Christian and Covenant Presbyterian Churches in Marshall.
